Sculpting
Forming shapes with pleated fabric is what I enjoy doing most. It typically takes multiple attempts.
The possibilities are infinite.
My practice revolves around play.
Pleated fabric is inherently sculptural and experimenting with the possibilities of what it could become is one of the most exciting aspects of being in the studio.
Shibori is labor intensive, binding everything by hand.
Compression is key when practicing the art of Shibori. Understanding your tension requires practice. One can attempt the same exact technique on two different weights of fabric and get very different results. Knowing how tight to bind a piece comes with experience.
There is always an element of surprise when practicing shibori.
Opening up a bound piece feels like unwrapping a present, each time creating a feeling of anticipation and joy.
Once I understood more about technique, then I became more intentional with color, placement, and leaving space.
With this, I could focus less on creating a recognizable Shibori pattern, but to have more abstraction.
